#1 · Apr 19, 2014 (Edited) 2006 - 550i - N62TU - Overheats in heavy traffic - no coolant leaks - I believe the coolant fan is intermittent (possible bad relay) Coolant fan load relay location. What I can tell from the Bentley manual, it is located right side trunk (fan cutoff relay - only applicable as of 3/2007)

Because the radiator fan often draws so much current, there is a relay that powers the radiator fan. Of course, this relay can get damaged, causing the radiator fan not to start. The fan relay is often located in the engine compartment fuse box, but the best way is to check your repair manual to find out where it is located.

While doing the timing belt, I discovered that at some point prior to my ownership, the main electric radiator fan had been unplugged at its connector near the power steering reservoir.
